ST. PAULS CHURCH KUNNAMKULAM

കേരളത്തില്‍ 1816 മുതല്‍ CMS മിഷ്യനറിമാരുടെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം ആരംഭിച്ചിരുന്നു. ആദ്യം വന്ന CMS മിഷ്യനറിയായ Rev. തോമസ് നോര്‍ട്ടണ്‍ 1816 ല്‍ ആലപ്പുഴയില്‍ വന്ന് താമസിച്ച് നിരവധി വിദ്യഭ്യാസ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളും സുവിശേഷപ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ക്കും തുടക്കം കുറിച്ചു. ഇതേസമയം തോമസ് ഡാവ്സണ്‍ 1817 കൊച്ചിയിലെത്തി ജുതന്മാരുടെ വിദ്യഭ്യാസത്തിന് മുന്‍കൈയ്യെടുത്തു. അസുഖം കാരണം 1820 ല്‍ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലേയ്ക്ക് തിരിച്ചുപോയെങ്കിലും 1826 ല്‍ Rev സാമുവേല്‍ റിസ്ഡെയില്‍ കൊച്ചിയില്‍ തോമസ് ഡാവ്സണ്‍ തുടങ്ങിവെച്ച പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ വര്‍ദ്ധിച്ച ഉല്‍സാഹത്തോടെ തുടര്‍ന്നു. ഇദ്ദേഹം തുടക്കംകുറിച്ച ആറ് ഉപ മേഖലകളായ തലപ്പിള്ളി, പഴഞ്ഞി, കണ്ടനാട്, തൃപ്പൂണിത്തറ,കുട്ടത്തോട്, ചാലക്കുടി എന്നിവയില്‍ ഉന്നായിരുന്നു കുന്നംകുളം (തലപ്പിള്ളി). രണ്ടു വര്‍ഷത്തിനുശേഷം 1839 ല്‍ പുതുക്കാടും പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം ആരംഭിച്ചു. കൂടുതല്‍ മിഷ്യനറിമാര്‍ എത്തിയതോടുകൂടി കൊച്ചി സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം വിപുലീകരിച്ചു.

Rev സാമുവേല്‍ റിസ്ഡെയിലിന്റെ പിന്‍ തുടര്‍ച്ചയായി 1839 ല്‍ തൃശ്ശുരില്‍ Rev ഹെന്റി ഹാര്‍ലി മിഷ്യനറി പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് തുടക്കംകുറിച്ചു. കൊച്ചിന്‍ സംസ്ഥാന ഗവണ്‍മെന്റ് തൃശ്ശുരില്‍ പള്ളി സ്ഥാപിക്കാന്‍ അനുമതി നല്‍കിയതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് 1840 ല്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ ആരംഭിച്ചു. ഇക്കാലത്ത് 1841 ല്‍ കൊച്ചിന്‍ മിഷ്യന്റെ ആസ്ഥാനം തൃശ്ശുരിലേയ്ക്ക് മാറ്റുകയും ചെയ്തു.

Rev ജെ ജി ബ്യൂറ്റ്‌ലര്‍ (1850-1862) തൃശ്ശുരില്‍ താമസിച്ച് കുന്നംകുളത്തെ മിഷ്യനറി പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് നേതൃത്വം കൊടുത്തിരുന്ന സമയത്ത് അന്ന് 'മിഷ്യന്‍ തോപ്പ്' എന്നപേരില്‍ അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഇന്നത്തെ ദേവാലയം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന സ്ഥലം വാങ്ങി, 1854 ല്‍ പള്ളിയും, മിഷ്യന്‍ ബംഗ്ലാവും, പള്ളിക്കൂടവും സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. ഇക്കാലത്ത് നിരവധി സുറിയാനി ഓര്‍ത്തോടക്സ് കുടുബംഗങ്ങളേയും, ഹിന്ദുക്കളേയും ആംഗ്ലിക്കന്‍ പള്ളിയില്‍ ചേര്‍ത്തു.

പിന്നീട് തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍-കൊച്ചിന്‍ ആംഗ്ലിക്കന്‍ മഹായിടവകയുടെ ആദ്യ ബിഷപ്പായിതീര്‍ന്ന Rev ജെ എച്ച് സ്പീച്ച്‌ലി(1862-1864) പള്ളിയുടെ ചുമതല വഹിച്ചിരുന്ന സമയത്ത് സാധുസംരക്ഷണത്തിനായി മന്ദിരവും, പുതുശ്ശേരിയില്‍ പള്ളിയും പണിയുകയുണ്ടായി. Rev ജെ എച്ച് സ്പീച്ച്‌ലിയ്ക്കുശേഷം Rev ജെ വില്‍ക്കിന്‍സണ്‍ ചുമതല വഹിച്ചു. CMS പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം ആരംഭിച്ചതിന്റെ അമ്പതാം വാര്‍ഷികത്തില്‍ (1866) Rev ജെ വില്‍സണ്‍ അമ്പതുപേരെ മാമോദീസ ചെയ്ത് പള്ളിയില്‍ അംഗങ്ങളാക്കി.

1868 മുതല്‍ 1873 വരെ ചുമതല വഹിച്ചിരുന്ന Rev വില്യം ഹോപ്പ് ദേവാലയം പുതുക്കിപണിത് പള്ളി മണിസ്ഥാപിക്കുകയും, മിഷ്യന്‍ തോപ്പില്‍ ധാരാളം മരങ്ങള്‍ വച്ചുപിടിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. പിന്‍ഗാമിയായ Rev ബവര്‍, കുന്നംകുളത്ത് വിദ്യഭ്യാസസ്ഥാപനങ്ങള്‍ ആരംഭിച്ചു.

1879 വരെ മദ്രാസ് ആംഗ്ലിക്കന്‍ മഹായിടവകയുടെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്ന കുന്നംകുളം സെന്റ് പോള്‍സ് ദേവാലയം 1879ല്‍ തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍-കൊച്ചിന്‍ ആംഗ്ലിക്കന്‍ മഹായിടവക രൂപീകൃതമാവുകയും പ്രഥമ ബിഷപ്പായി Rt. Rev ജെ എച്ച് സ്പീച്ച്‌ലി നിയുക്തനാവുകയും ചെയ്തതോടെ ഇതില്‍ കീഴിലായി.

1883 ല്‍ Rev പിം എമ്മം വര്‍ഗ്ഗീസ് പള്ളി വികാരിയായിരുന്നു. 1892 ല്‍ തെക്കന്‍, മദ്ധ്യ, വടക്കന്‍ മേഖലകള്‍ രൂപീകരിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ കുന്നംകുളവും, തൃശ്ശുരും വടക്കന്‍ മേഖലയില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെട്ടു. 1892 ല്‍ ശ്രീ ബൗച്ചര്‍ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് വിദ്യഭ്യാസം നടപ്പിലാക്കി. 1893 ല്‍ Rev വാക്കര്‍ കുന്നംകുളത്ത് സുവിശേഷപ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ക്കായി എത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. 1906 മൂന്നാമത്തെ ബിഷപ്പായിരുന്ന Rt Rev Dr ഗില്‍ കുന്നംകുളം ദേവാലയം സന്ദര്‍ശിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. 1928 ല്‍ തൃശ്ശുര്‍ കൗണ്‍സില്‍ നിലവില്‍ വരുകയും കുന്നംകുളം, തൃശ്ശുര്‍, ആലുവ, മൂവാറ്റുപുഴ, കൊച്ചി എന്നിവ തൃശ്ശുര്‍ കൗണ്‍സിലിന്റെ കീഴില്‍ വരുകയും ചെയ്തു.

*C.M.S Missionary activities started in Kerala in 1816. It was Rev.Thomas Norton the first C.M.S. Missionary who came to Kerala in 1816; and settled in Alleppy and organized many Educational and Evangelical activities there. By the time, Thomas Dawson arrived at Cochin in1817, and stayed at Cochin and took interest in the education of the Jewish community. Due to ill health Dawson returned to home in 1820. In 1826 Rev.Samuel Risdale came to Cochin and the Evangelical and Educational works started by Dawson was continued by him, with great enthusiasm. In1836, he started six ‘Ex-Stations’ viz. Thalappally (Kunnamkulam), Pazhanji, Kandanad, Trippunithura, Kuttatodu, and Chalakkudi, After two years (1838) another Ex-stations at Puthukkadu was started. As more missionaries came, the C.M.S extended its activities to the other parts of Cochin State.

C.M.S Evangelical works begun in Trichur in 1839 by Rev. Henry Harley who had succeeded by Rev. Samuel Ridsdale. Sanction has been given by Cochin government to erect a church at Trichur. building operations were commenced in 1840. In 1841 Cochin Mission Head quarters was transferred to Trichur. Rev. J .G Beuttler residing at Trichur worked in Kunnamkulam from1850 to 1862. During this time he purchased present 'Mission Thope' and built a school, a church (Chapel constructed in 1854) and a Bungalow at Kunnamkulam. He converted many Orthodox Christians and Hindus to Anglican church. After his retirement in 1862, Rev. J.H. Speechly (later become 1st Bishop of *Chochin - Travancore Diocese) took over the charge and he worked there for two years (1862-1864). He built a boarding home at Kunnamkulam and a Church at Puthuchery. He was succeeded by Rev. J .Wilkinson he worked at Kunnamkulam for two years (1864-1866). At the 50th anniversary celebration of C.M.S. in 1866 Rev. J. Wilson baptized 50 persons and made them members of the church. Rev. William Hope(1868-1873) renovated the church, fixed Church Bell, and planted several trees in the 'Mission Thope'. During his period several families became members of C.M.S. Church. In 1877, Rev. Hope went back to England because of the illness of his wife. Rev. Hope was succeeded by Rev. F. Bower. He started educational institutions at Kunnamkulam.

In 1879, Travancore and Cochin Diocese of Anglican Church came in to being and the first Bishop was Rt. Rev. J. H. Speechly. Trichur and Kunnamkulam came under this Diocese.

In 1883, Rev. P.M. Verghese was the Vicar of Kunnamkulam. C.M.S church. He was born in Kaduvettoor family of Chengannur in 1830, and expired on 31st September 1893 at Changanassery.

In 1892, South Central and North zone were established. Trichur and Kunnamkulam were under North zone. Mr. Bowcher, started English education at Kunnamkulam in 1892.

Rev. Walker reached Kunnamkulam during 1893 and worked for spiritually uplifting the people from Kunnamkulam in the North to Kannitti in the South of Kerala.

In 1906, Dr. Gill, the 3rd Bishop visited, Kunnamkulam C.M.S. church. Trichur Council was established in 1928. Trichur, Kunnamkulam, Aluva, Muvattupuzha and Kochi were under this Council.
